Basic High School Theatre
Student Handbook 2007 & 2008
Important Information about Basic High
School Theatre For Parents and Students
Mission The mission
of BHS Theatre is to provide opportunities for all students to support their
education through the exploration of creative and performing arts. There is an expectation for every
theatre student to: Respect Yourself, Respect Others, Be A Team Player, Be Committed and Faithful, To Your Academics, And To Your Craft.
Theatre is a
collaborative art. Every member of the
ensemble is important. Students and
their growth as a person and performer are more important than the
production. YOU are the reason
we have a company!
Take care of
your body and live a clean lifestyle. Show care and respect to each other, to
the staff, and to the faculty of Basic High School. Take care of our beautiful facility and equipment. Be a positive asset to the ensemble.
This handbook
will serve as a good faith agreement between the student, the parent/guardian,
and the BHS Theatre Department.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are
the objectives of BHS Theatre Arts?
The
objectives of BHS Theatre are:
- To promote, uphold, and advocate
for the study and understanding of the discipline of theatre
- To develop a positive work ethic
- To develop a sense of good
professional behavior
- To promote a safe, nurturing,
hate-free environment in which to live and work
- To build bridges to the future
that include networking, college preparation, and realistic work
experiences
What if I cannot attend school or rehearsal due to illness
or emergency?
You must call
your director and director prior to 7:30 am on the day you are to be
absent. You would have to call your
employer; we expect no less courtesy and respect. For now, school is your job.
What is
BHS Theatre's behavioral standard?
BHS Theatre
follows the CCSD standards for behavior. In addition, enrollment in a theatre class, participation in a
production, and membership in the thespian honor troupe are privileges that can
be revoked due to behavior that disrupts the academic process.
What is
the department's behavioral standard?
- Be on time. BHS tardy policy will be enforced.
- Dress appropriately and be
prepared to work. See Dress Code
- Know your limitations and
how/when to say no.
- Prioritize.
- Do your best to eat healthy,
drink plenty of WATER, and get plenty of rest.
- Live a clean lifestyle. Stay away from tobacco. Get help for any bad habits you may
have developed. Treat your problem
before you get arrested for use or possession.
- Treat others-teachers, staff,
administrators, and other students- with respect and kindness. FOUL AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE WILL NOT
BE TOLERATED!
- Each student has the responsibility
to the ensemble—the classroom ensemble, the cast/crew ensemble, the
thespian club ensemble, and the departmental ensemble. An ensemble is created only when every
member of the group buys in to the concept.
What does
it mean to be academically eligible?
There are certain standards of academics
and behavior that must be met in order for a student to be eligible to
participate in school/extra-curricular activities. The CCSD policy is summarized in this handbook. Please be familiar with this policy. In addition, failure in academic courses may
result in a student being removed from a production, or prevented from
participating in a production and other school activities.
If an academic teacher has a concern about a student
progress, s/he will discuss it with the director/instructor. They will work together to help that
student. All instructors want their
students to be successful; however, academic and behavioral eligibility is
ultimately the responsibility of the student and the parent(s)/guardian.
What is the Theatre Hours
policy and how does it work?
A portion of
a student grade is based on participation in after school hours. A student can obtain required hours by
participating in any department sanctioned after-school activity. The activity must be approved and supervised
by a faculty member. It must be related
to the instructional or developmental goals of the school theatre department.
Hours can be
obtained by working on a crew, either for a department show or another departments
show, being a cast member, ushering, working in the box office, working in the
concession stand, participating in thespian service or fundraising activities,
or otherwise working for faculty, staff, or administration in the business of
performing arts at BHS.
Theatre
Hours Requirements:
- Theatre I/Tech Theatre I-20
hours/semester
- Theatre II/Tech Theatre II-30
hours/semester
- Theatre III/IV/Tech Theatre
III-40 hours/semester
What are the basics of cast/crew selection?
The arts
faculty is committed to fair casting and crew selection. Fair casting means we will cast the best
person for the role. Fair crew
selections means we will select the best person for the crew. There are not
enough roles/positions for everyone to have a part every time. However, we are
committed to providing as many opportunities as possible.
Those
students who have failed academically may not be eligible through the next
grading period, and must prove eligibility before they will be considered for
cast or crew.
Students are strongly
encouraged to audition for all departmental productions. Required auditions
may also be considered a class assignment or grade at the instructors discretion. Production Hours will be granted for participation in the
audition process for all students in all grade levels. See Important Dates for audition
dates.
What are the rules if I get cast or selected as a crew member?
- Cast/Crew
are required to attend ALL dress/technical rehearsals. Medical/Dental appointments should not
be scheduled during these times unless it is an emergency.
- Make
all rehearsals. There will always be an accurate rehearsal schedule at
least a week in advance.
- Cast
members will be allowed only two (2) excused absences from rehearsals
before being replaced. An excused
absence is one that is prearranged with the director, in writing, and
unavoidable.
- Cast
and Crew members are required to attend school on rehearsal and
performance days.
- If
cast in a play or musical, and replacement is necessary for any reason,
a $100.00 costume fee will be assessed.
What about issues regarding
transportation?
There will be times
when cast/crew members will need to find their own transportation. Most
rehearsals will take place after school from 1:30-3:30 M-F. There will be a few
late rehearsals (no later than 8:30) during production week(s). In addition, there may also be an occasional
weekend call. Rehearsals, performances, and work calls will not be held on
Sundays. All late rehearsals will be
scheduled in advance.
The district policy regarding picking up students after
rehearsals and performances insists that all students are picked up within
30 minutes of the end of the event. Students
should make arrangements to be picked up prior to the end of rehearsal.
What if my parent/guardian wants to help out?
Yes! Parents/guardians are always welcome to
offer assistance or donate goods and services. Any donation of time, materials or services is tax deductible. If you or
a parent sees a need that can be filled, or have skills or materials that might
be helpful to the department, please have them contact Mrs. Day.
What do I do if I have a question or concern that is not
addressed in this handbook?
Ask the
question! If there is something that
you do not understand, ask about it. The only stupid question is the one that remains a question.
Survival in High School Theatre

once in awhile. Do not take on more

your homework to rehearsal. Those
students that can motivate themselves to study in any environment tend to
be more successful. Use your time
wisely.
- Do not
be afraid to ask for a ride! Be
willing to cough up some gas money.
- Do not
be afraid to ask for help from your peers and teachers.

- No food or drink is allowed in
any part of the House. Bottled

dean’s office.

shortcut to/from classes.

theatre equipment without authorization.

space. It is up to us to respect
and protect the areas.
Departmental Dress Code
The Theatre
Department will enforce all of Basic High School dress Code
requirements. See student handbook for
full disclosure on subject. While it is understood that fashion is an
acceptable way of expressing your individuality and personality, nevertheless

Hair and Piercings
Those
students who are serious about their education and their experiences in the
theatre must keep their appearance neutral. An actor assumes a role mentally and emotionally, so does the actor
assume the role physically. Tattoos,
body piercings, and unusual hair color are discouraged for these reasons. In addition, body piercings, especially in
the tongue and mouth, are extremely prone to infection and get in the way of
good diction.
